Nutritional Therapy & Nutrigenomics

My approach to working with you

Holistic – is an approach to wellness that considers you as a whole person, not just your physical symptoms or diseases. It recognises that health is influenced by many factors, such as mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being, as well as environmental and lifestyle choices. Together we’ll assess beyond nutrition to your lifestyle, stress levels, mindset, quality of sleep and movement.

Sustainable – consistent, small changes allow you to create a positive and lasting impact. Educating you on implementing and sustaining these changes can help you to feel empowered and in control of your health.

Evidence-based – every recommendation provided is backed by the latest scientific research. I geek out on learning this so I can educate you. Also, as a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the British Association of Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT), I am required to demonstrate continual learning development (CPD).

Bio-individuality – you are unique which means you require a personalised health plan which accounts for your specific life experiences, genetics, epigenetics, environment, and gut microbiome. Your plan will focus on addressing the root causes of your problems, rather than just your symptoms, but also be suitable for your lifestyle and food preferences.

What is Nutritional Therapy?

The food we eat has a profound effect on our body, mentally and physically and can affect our mood and body functions.  Nutritional therapy applies the science behind the food and the nutrients to an individual’s imbalances to either improve their health and performance or prevent further health and well-being issues.

It educates for long-term health and can be used alongside conventional medicine. Nutritional therapy involves ongoing follow-up visits to support behavioural and lifestyle changes. Unlike general nutrition education, which provides basic information to the public, nutritional therapy is tailored to your unique needs and health goals.

What is Nutrigenomics?

Nutrigenomics explores how your genes and nutrition interact with each other to influence your health and disease risk. It aims to understand how different nutrients, foods, and dietary patterns can affect gene expression and how genetic variations can influence individual responses to nutrition.

There are 2 subcategories which both aim to improve personalised health and nutrition.

Nutrigenetics identifies how your genes influence your body’s response to nutrition. Some people may have a gene variant that makes them more likely to absorb iron from food, while others may have a gene variant that makes them more prone to lactose intolerance. Nutrigenetics can help to identify these individual differences and tailor dietary recommendations.

Nutrigenomics focuses on how nutrients affect the expression of genes. Some nutrients may activate or deactivate certain genes that are involved in metabolism, inflammation, or disease prevention. Nutrigenomics can help to understand how different foods and dietary patterns can influence gene activity and health outcomes.

Age Environment Gender Nutrition

Only 1% of your DNA is different to everyone else’s and is what makes you individual. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) makes up this variation in your DNA. Testing these SNP’s shows why some individuals react poorly to specific nutrients, develop diseases, and differ in drug responses.

Your genes do not dictate your health but can give insight into potential disease risks. This insight can help to optimise your health and well-being based on your unique genetic makeup and nutritional needs.
